A co-ownership arrangement enables individuals and families to achieve their housing dreams. This creative approach to homeownership can be between family members, friends or even strangers who have the same financial goals and values. Co-ownership entails each party contributing to the purchase price and monthly mortgage payments for the home they share together. This allows you to get onto the property ladder without having to save for a large deposit, and can be an affordable way to invest in a new home and build equity.

The benefits of co-ownership include shared maintenance costs, social interactions with other homeowners and the ability to rent your part of the home to others when you are not using it. However, like any investment decision, co-ownership is not without its challenges. These can include disagreements over usage and repairs, personal disputes and the need for clear communication and agreements to avoid conflict. However, with a bespoke booking system curated by August and the right legal guidance, these issues can be managed with ease.

With housing prices continuing to rise, it is becoming increasingly difficult for people to get on the property ladder. It is generally a purpose-built property development with the needs of older people in mind. These properties may be flats, apartments or retirement bungalows. Some will have communal facilities, such as lounges and laundry rooms. Typically, a manager or warden will be on-site to be able to respond quickly to emergencies.

Residents are often grouped together intentionally, based on housing history and compatibility, to form a friendly community where everyone can feel safe and supported. This provides a sense of belonging and helps to combat loneliness, which can be a major concern for many older people.

As well as providing a place to live, sheltered housing can offer other benefits such as healthcare coordination and support to manage finances. This can be beneficial for older adults who struggle to complete everyday tasks or those with degenerative health conditions such as dementia, and it can reduce the risk of isolation.

Sheltered housing can be a good option for older adults who want to live independently, but it is important to consider whether the level of support offered is sufficient for your individual needs. If you require a greater level of support, you should consider moving into extra care housing or a care home.
